BQ Pulled “Pork”.
Jackfruit is a very versatile fruit and can be used as a meat replacer to make your favorite “BBQ Pulled Pork”, “Sloppy Joe’s” or any other BBQ dish. The jackfruit texture and mild taste makes it a wonderful stand-in for meat. Other than a slight sweet taste, almost like pineapple, the jackfruit is pretty much a blank canvas, so you can use whatever spice and flavor profile you like best. In this case I have used the BBQ Sauce recipe you can find on this site. You will have to use the canned green or young jackfruit vs. the fresh fully ripe ones (they are just too sweet). The fresh jackfruit is delicious but not suitable to absorb the BBQ flavors or any other flavors and make it into a “Pulled Pork” BBQ dish.

Ingredients
- 1 onion sweet, medium size
- 2 cans jackfruit
- 2 cups BBQ Sauce Home made, recipe on this site
- 2 avocado sliced
- 2 cups arugula or any other green
- 12 slices whole grain bread
Instructions
- Sauté the onion* Next add the jackfruit after you have drained and rinsed them thoroughly. Some people remove the seeds but with the young canned jackfruit, I don't think this step is needed. Use only jackfruit in water or brine, NOT in syrup.* Note: To dry sauté (or sautéing without oil!) use high heat and frequent movement to caramelize the food. An important thing to keep in mind is that foods will not brown, color or caramelize if you use liquid or have too much moisture. Once you achieve the desired coloration then add your liquid.
- Sauté the jackfruit and add the 2 cups of BBQ sauce. Let simmer for about 20 minutes and use two forks to pull the jackfruit apart.
- Prep your bread with some arugula and avocado slices.
- Add the BBQ jackfruit "BBQ Pulled Pork" and enjoy.
Notes
I have tried a lot of different ingredients to make a dish that looks, tastes and has the texture of meat but jackfruit is my all-time favorite now. The ingredients I have used are:
- Tofu
- Tempeh
- Seitan
- Mushrooms
- Beans, legumes and lentil mixtures
- and making things like a cauliflower "stake"

Made this and it was good. We were surprised. I might have gone overboard on the sauce, ie I mixed in more than the 2 cups the recipe called for. The next night we mixed the dish with quinoa and we liked it better than on a sandwich. Maybe the quinoa soaked up the sauce. Also I think I shredded the jack fruit too much.
Never can have too much sauce 🙂
